November 22, 2017: The Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) has set a record by handling 81,927 TEU containers through the port during last month.

The Transnet Port Terminal (TPT) said that the remarkable volume performance came despite abnormally adverse weather conditions – which affected service delivery to clients – but also amid sluggish economic growth that was impacting both imports and exports.

Of the record volumes handled, 19 percent were imports, 18 percent were exports and 63 percent were transshipments, said officials from TPT.

The NCT, which started operations eight year ago in 2009, has since then complemented the South African port system as a transshipment hub and plays a significant role in increasing South Africa’s international trade.
