Mar 18, 2019: As part of its massive expansion plan in 2019, Tema Port of Ghana has received seven ship-to-shore (STS) and 20 rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes recently and is set to open its first phase on June 28.

These were among the final pieces of a $1.0 billion investment by APM Terminals and its partners in Meridian Port Services (MPS), Bollore Africa Logistics and Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority, said an APM Terminals spokesperson in a statement.

He explained that the breakwater and access channel will be able to accommodate the world's largest container ships, and the first two deep-water berths were expected to be able to receive commercial vessels by the end of June.

"Port infrastructure for receiving and delivering containers from and to shippers and consignees will also be ready," said the spokesperson, highlighting that the third new berth would be operational in the first quarter of 2020.

Tema's new world-class port infrastructure will support the country's economic growth, providing 3.5 million TEUs in annual throughput capacity once full construction is completed next year.
