Port of Tema ready to receive first vessel

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has declared that the Port of Tema is prepared for the arrival of its first vessel after the completion of its expansion. As of now, the port can handle a capacity of two million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs)

The $1.5-billion construction project was carried out by MPS in collaboration with the China Harbour Engineering Company.

July 04, 2019: The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has declared that the Port of Tema is prepared for the arrival of its first vessel after the completion of its expansion. As of now, the port can handle a capacity of two million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs).

The $1.5-billion construction project was carried out by Meridian Port Services (MPS) in collaboration with the China Harbour Engineering Company.

"Tema will not just open up Ghana but to the world, it will also bring long-term and sustainable economic growth that creates more jobs," said MPS CEO Mohammed Samara.

The first commercial vessel, the MV Cape Coast, is expected to arrive between July 3-5 and this will be the first test for the port's marine piloting team.
