Africa’s largest wind farm begins operation in Kenya
Kenya has inaugurated Africa’s largest wind farm on the eastern shores of Lake Turkana.
July 25, 2019: Kenya has inaugurated Africa's largest wind farm on the eastern shores of Lake Turkana. The project worth $680 million is the largest private investment in the history of Kenya.
The 365-turbine wind power plant will deliver 310 megawatts of renewable energy to the country's national grid.
"Today we again raise the bar for the continent as we unveil the single largest wind farm. The Turkana project will ensure that we become energy-independent and that our energy supply is safe," president Uhuru Kenyatta said.
The wind farm lies in the Turkana corridor, a wind tunnel which generates optimal conditions year-round.
Earlier this year, Kenyatta announced that Kenya would be 100 percent committed to renewable energy by 2020.
